Volunteer
Volunteer programsFIRN depends on a caring, dedicated and talented cadre of volunteers to supplement its small professional staff.
FIRN's' volunteers are as diverse as their reasons for volunteering. To some, volunteering at FIRN provides a creative outlet for special skills and talents – a knack for teaching, a flair for photography, a gift for working with computers. Others simply enjoy interacting with people while honing their foreign language skills. Many are looking for change from their daily routine – one that brings extra meaning to their lives. But the common thread that binds our volunteers is their shared commitment to bridging cultures and building community.
FIRN highly values its many volunteers (99 in FY 2007, totaling 5,277 hours) and provides them with “best practices” volunteer management support, training and recognition. So give your voice to your heart through volunteering, and the cross-cultural interactions you will receive in return will be priceless!
Volunteer OpportunitiesFIRN provides a diverse array of volunteer opportunities for all ages and circumstances:
- A K-12 classroom can adopt FIRN for a fundraising project while learning about other cultures.
- A retiree might relish tutoring children or adults in English or help immigrants study for citizenship, GED or other exams. If so, Club LEAP or Adult LEAP is for you!
- Local businesses, religious groups, and community organizations are welcomed partners for Adult LEAP literacy programs.
- A “stay-at-home mom” can mentor a recent immigrant through the process of obtaining a drivers license or buying a home while her own children are in school.
- A family can pitch in with a FIRN mailing or special event – teaching their children the value of giving to others while strengthening their own family bonds.
- Anyone with a good idea can help to design and develop a new FIRN program that addresses an unmet need.
